Constructionline: levels, cost and when you need it

Constructionline is a UK register of pre-qualified suppliers for construction and related services. Buyers (councils, housing associations, main contractors and others) search it to find firms whose pre-qualification information has already been checked, and many name a Constructionline membership level as a selection requirement in tenders and frameworks. Despite the name, membership extends beyond building trades to services procured alongside construction, such as maintenance, facilities and professional services.

The levels

Buyers state the level they require. Silver is a common floor for site-based public work because it bundles the SSIP health and safety element.

When public buyers require it

Constructionline appears most in construction, housing, repairs and maintenance, and facilities procurement. As with all such schemes, public buyers are expected to accept equivalents, so notices usually read "Constructionline Silver or equivalent". If you already hold SSIP membership elsewhere and can evidence the other checks, you can usually satisfy the requirement without joining. Where a buyer runs its shortlisting through the register itself, membership is the practical route regardless.

How to get it

1. Register on the Constructionline site and complete the question set for your chosen level: company details, financials, insurance, health and safety, environmental and quality information. 2. Upload your evidence; the verification team reviews it and queries any gaps. 3. For Silver and above, complete the Acclaim health and safety assessment, or supply a current assessment from another SSIP member scheme, which is recognised. 4. Membership renews annually, and buyers see your live status on the register.

Cost and time

Fees are set by membership level and scale with company turnover, from a modest annual fee at Bronze to more at Gold and Platinum; check the Constructionline site for current prices. With documentation ready, Bronze and Silver are typically achievable within a few weeks, and the SSIP health and safety assessment is usually the pacing item. As with all pre-qualification schemes, the underlying work (policies, insurance, accounts, health and safety evidence) is the same material every selection questionnaire asks for, so time spent assembling it is never wasted.
